NHTSA report concludes tire pressure monitoring systems are “highly effective”

tire-pressure-monitoring-systemA tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is a simple electronic system which monitors air pressure in vehicle tires and informs drivers when their tires have become underinflated. These systems are extremely useful for both safety and C02 emissions purposes. Since underinflated tires have a higher risk of failure and cannot provide maximum mileage, countries around the world have mandated TPMS systems in new vehicles. In the United States, all light motor vehicles less than 10,000 lbs. are fitted with a tire pressure monitoring system that must alert drivers when their tires are severely underinflated.

So how effective are these systems? Do they actually do what they are supposed to?

In a nutshell: yes. According to a recent study released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “tire pressure monitoring systems are highly effective at preventing significant underinflation.” Tire inflation measurements were taken from 2,316 cars, light trucks and SUVS in a sample designed to be representative of the vehicle breakdown in the U.S. NHTSA officials who analyzed the findings reported that 57% of vehicles equipped with monitoring systems had correct tire pressure, compared to only 43% of vehicles in the group without a TPMS.  As far as tires that were considered “significantly underinflated,” 55% of the tires in this group were non-TPMS, while only 45% had monitoring systems. 

It looks like theres still work to be done, and there’s certainly no excuse for not properly maintaining your tires. If everyone kept their tires at correct pressure levels, we could reduce accidents as well as CO2 emissions. Tire pressure monitoring systems are a great start, and we predict there will be future government mandates that ensure better mileage for all vehicle owners.
